Seiko Epson Corporation Wearable Device Division, WP Planning and Design Department

The WP Development and Design Department of Seiko Epson Corporation's Wearable Device Division is responsible for the development and design of the "movements" that power watches, primarily for the ORIENT brand.

A "movement" is like the engine in a car, and comes in several drive systems, including quartz and mechanical.

The division performs all aspects of quartz and mechanical watch manufacturing in-house, from development and design to parts manufacturing, assembly, and completion, making it a true watch manufacturer.

Today, we spoke with three members of the WP Development and Design Department: Toshitake Nagahama, Toru Kawasaki, and Haruna Moriya.

Customer visits

C-Set released version 11 of its flagship product, "3DTascalX," in 2022.
It has been a best-seller for over 20 years since version 1 was released, and some companies have been using it all this time.
Therefore, we decided to visit long-time user companies to express our gratitude by presenting them with commemorative gifts, and to conduct interviews to learn more about how they introduced the product and how they use it.

This time, we visited Seiko Epson Corporation.

Mr. Toshitaka Nagahama

How did you find out about our products?

I heard that it was first introduced in 2002, and that "3DTascalX" was purchased in conjunction with the introduction of 3D CAD.

The person in charge has changed, and I believe I am the third person in charge.

It's been passed down through the generations, and it's definitely software that's essential within the company. (Mr. Nagahama)

Ms. Haruna Moriya

How do you use 3DTascalX?

In addition to the WP Development and Design Department, other departments that frequently use 3DTascalX include the Quality Assurance and Production Engineering departments.

The Quality Assurance Department creates "Maintenance Manuals" for authorized dealers who sell and maintain watches, extracting the necessary information from 3D data.
The Production Engineering Department primarily creates assembly work procedures for manufacturing, and frequently uses 3D data to extract the necessary information for these documents.
Due to the nature of the documents, we frequently use display and screen capture functions to load assembly data, show/hide each unit, and use transparency to show the internal component layout.

In the Development and Design Department, 3D CAD data is output as intermediate data when passed to partner companies or other departments. The data is then checked for corruption during output using 3DTascalX. We also frequently use features not available in 3D CAD, such as the "height color coding" function.
Of course, CAD is used in design work, but because CAD is associated with PLM and other systems, the process of launching it and selecting the target data can take quite a bit of time. Honestly, when I just want to take a quick look at the shape or cut out an image, 3DTascalX is convenient because it launches easily with a double-click and starts up quickly. (Mr. Moriya)

Mr. Toru Kawasaki

How do you use 3DTascalX?

At our company, even when there are design changes, we always create 3DX (3DTascalX) data and store and manage the 3DX together with the CAD data.
This is more convenient when you don't need to view the history. We have some older employees, and while 3D CAD user interfaces have changed a lot, 3DTascalX seems easy to use, as its appearance hasn't changed much over the years, for better or worse (laughs).

We also often use "D-ViewPlus," which comes with 3DTascalX.
At our company, we manage 2D drawings as final drawings. We use it to view these drawings and to check for errors, as errors often occur when outputting 2D drawings from 3D CAD as DXF. (Mr. Kawasaki)

Future Plans

We make watches that accurately tell time. In manufacturing, I think it's very important to ensure that the "intent" of the design is understood during component manufacturing, assembly, and maintenance.
With new product designs, the mechanism changes significantly, so 3D data becomes increasingly important for communicating intent, such as "Why this shape?" and "Why this precision?"
I would like to continue using 3DTascalX to clearly share my design intent.
